::Barnaby meets King Arthur

Barnaby was not an ordinary bear. While he stayed at Short Heath School he was just a floppy little teddy bear that the children loved. But the children knew a secret that the teachers didn’t.

When Barnaby went home with the children, he woke up and walked and talked and took the children on magical adventures.

It was Keishas turn to take Barnaby home.

Keisha packed Barnaby into her backpack and made her way out of school. Keisha felt the backpack move and wriggle and then she heard the zip being undone. She heard a whisper, “Are we out yet?”

“Yes we are.” Said Keisha

Barnaby asked, “What adventures are we going to have this week?”

“We are going to my Nanny’s crystal shop in the Market.” Keisha replied.

Barnaby knew that when he went to the crystal shop, a great adventure would be waiting for him.

When they got there, Barnaby saw all different things in the shop. There were Dreamcatchers, red Indian statues, angels and fairys. But he knew the best thing that was there was the crystal table. In the middle of the room was a round table. On the table was all different crystals. Blue ones, red ones and clear ones. Square ones, round ones and funny shape ones.
Barnaby picked up a black and white crystal. Keishas nanny said, “That one is called Merlinite. It is a really magical crystal.”

Barnaby asked, “Can I borrow it please?”

“Yes. But bring it back” Keishas nanny replied.

That night when Keisha and Barnaby went to bed, Barnaby put the Merlinite crystal under their pillow. Then they fell fast asleep.

When they woke, they were no longer in their bed. Instead there were trees and grass and a river flowing by them. Just in front of them was a dirt road. The sun was shining and the birds were singing. It was a wonderful day.

They followed the road until in front of them was a large castle. It had a river flowing around the bottom of the castle. Barnaby told Keisha “That’s called a moat.”

There was a drawbridge across the moat which looked like a bridge. They walked across the drawbridge and saw two knights dressed in shiny metal armour that shone in the sunlight.

The one knight saw Barnaby and bowed. “Greetings Sir Barnaby and the fair Lady Keisha.” He said, “Please enter the castle of Camelot. King Arthur is waiting for you.”

“Thank you.” They both replied.

They made their way into a great big hall. At the end of the hall was a throne, and the King sitting crying in it.

Barnaby and Keisha walked up to the King. “What is wrong?” asked Keisha.

King Arthur looked up, “Oh Lady Keisha,” he sobbed “I have lost my sword, and I don’t know where to find it.”

“Where did you last see it?” Barnaby asked.

“I know I was using it to cut my sandwiches in the kitchens, but I can’t remember having it after that.”

Barnaby said to the king “Don’t worry King Arthur, me and Keisha will find your sword.”

“Oh thank you, I would be very grateful” the king said.

Barnaby and Keisha ran to the kitchens. Inside, the kings cook was cooking something nice. It smelt like… “APPLE PIE!!!!” They both shouted.

“Oh hello there, me dears” said the cook. She was just getting the apple pie out of the oven. “Would you like some?” she asked.

“Yes please” said Barnaby and Keisha together.

“So what brings you here to see little ole cook then?”

“The king has lost his sword. We are trying to find it.” Keisha said.

“Oh, you must be talking about that long knife. I used it to cut the apples up for this apple pie. Then I lent it to someone else.” Cook said.

“Who did you lend it to?” Barnaby asked.

“Oh my, I am always forgetting things. Now who did I lend it to?” she asked herself. “Oh I know. It was that wizard man. Merlin I think his name is.”

They wanted to go and look for Merlin but they did not want to leave their scrummy apple pie. After they ate all their pie, they said “Goodbye” to the cook and went to look for Merlin.

Merlin, had a tower in the corner of the castle. They had to climb up the stairs. They went up and up, and round and round until they were at the top of the tower.

As if by magic, the door in front of them opened. Inside was a man dressed in a blue robe with gold stars and moons all over it. “Hello, my name is Merlin. I know who are. You are Sir Barnaby and you are Lady Keisha.”

“How did you know that?” Keisha asked.

“I am very magical. I know a lot of things.”

“Then you know where King Arthurs sword is?” Barnaby asked.

“Of course I do. I borrowed it off cook for Sir Lancelot. The kings best knight” he replied.

They both sighed. “Oh, we will never find the sword like this. We don’t even know where Sir Lancelot is.”

“I can help with that.” Merlin said. “I can cast a spell to find him. I call it my Transport Vortex. It creates pictures from nowhere and I can see anything. I call it TV for short.”

Merlin went and got a few things to cast the spell. He got some bats wings, some sulphurous ash and some spider silk. He started chanting some magic words and magically a cloud appeared in front of them. The cloud cleared and pictures started appearing.

There was a picture of a cat chasing a mouse. Then all of a sudden the cat stood on a garden rake and it flew up and hit him in the nose. Keisha said “I know what this is. This is Tom and Jerry.”

Merlin said “I know, I sit here all day watching cartoons. I cannot get any work done. Let me change the channel.”

The next thing they saw was a knight swinging a sword around. “That’s Sir Lancelot” said Merlin. He was swinging the sword and then brought the sword down and was chopping branches with it to make a fire.

“I know where that is.” Said Barnaby “That’s where we started.”

They both said “Thank you” to Merlin. And ran out the door as Merlin started watching Tom and Jerry again. He said to himself “I can see this catching on in the future.”

Barnaby and Keisha ran down the stairs as carefully as they could. They went down and down and round and round. They ran out through the great hall and out over the drawbridge and down the path.

They got to where Sir Lancelot was. He was sitting at the fire he made.

“Hello Sir Lancelot” They said.

“Well ‘ello there” he replied.

“That sword you were using to chop the branches. What did you do with it?”

“That thing. It was no good to chop branches at all. I threw it in the lake down there.”

They walked down the bank of the lake to where Sir Lancelot had said he threw the sword in. Sadly they sat down thinking of how they can get the sword. But they couldn’t think of anything.

They sat thinking of what they were going to do all day until the sun was going down. Then as they sun was almost down and it was reflecting across the lake they saw something glittering in the water.

It was getting closer and closer then all of a sudden, the tip of the sword came up out of the water. It raised higher and higher until they saw a hand holding the sword up. As they watched the hand went higher then there was an arm, then a head of a beautiful lady, then her body and her legs. She was walking through the water towards them.

She walked up to Barnaby and Keisha “Hello. I am the lady of the lake. The sword you seek is called Excalibur. It is a magical sword. Take this sword back to King Arthur.”

They thanked the Lady of the Lake and ran back as fast as they could to King Arthur.

“Oh thank you very very much” said the King “I promise to look after it more carefully this time.”

Merlin came rushing in to the room. “I watched you on my TV. I saw you get the sword, well done.” He said “Take this wand as a gift from us all.”

Keisha took the wand from Merlin. “Thank you.” She said.

The King said, “You must be tired after all that. You may sleep in my bed tonight. I will sleep on my chair here.”

He called the guards to show them to his bed chamber. “Good night” he shouted after them,

“Good night” replied Barnaby and Keisha.

When they went to bed, Keisha put the wand under her pillow and they both fell fast asleep.

When they woke up the next morning, they were in their own bed. Keisha felt under the pillow for the Merlinite crystal, but also found the magic wand that Merlin had given them. Could they have really been to Camelot and seen King Arthur?

Keisha put the magic wand next to all the other things that she got from their adventures.

As Keisha was walking back into school on Monday with Barnaby, he said “Good bye Keisha. I will see you next time.”

“Good bye Barnaby” said Keisha.

Then Barnaby became the floppy little teddy bear again that the children knew and loved.
